ISLAMABAD: New Zealand claimed a dominant 73-run victory over Pakistan in the first ODI at McLean Park, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing a stiff target of 345, Pakistan faltered and was bowled out for 271 in 44.1 overs. Agha Salman fought hard with a 48-ball 58, but Pakistan’s middle and lower order collapsed under mounting pressure.
Nathan Smith starred with the ball for New Zealand, taking 4/60 in 8.1 overs, including the final wicket of Akif Javed. Jacob Duffy provided strong support, picking up 2/57 in his spell.
Earlier, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 344/9, setting the stage for a high-scoring contest. Despite a steady start, Pakistan lost momentum, with the last five overs proving disastrous—losing six wickets for just 21 runs.
Pakistan will now look to bounce back in the second ODI as New Zealand eyes a series win.
