“It makes no sense to play after the floods in Spain,” says Atletico boss Simeone

The deadliest flash floods in Spain’s modern history have claimed at least 211 lives, with many still unaccounted for, as torrential rains ravaged the Valencia region. In light of this tragedy, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone stated on Saturday that it makes no sense to play this weekend.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed the devastating impact of the floods, marking this disaster as Europe’s worst flood-related catastrophe since 1967, when over 500 people died in Portugal. Several matches, including Saturday’s clash between Valencia and Real Madrid and Villarreal versus Rayo Vallecano, have been postponed due to the severe conditions.

Simeone expressed his sentiments ahead of Atletico’s home game against Las Palmas on Sunday. “What is happening is very difficult; it’s moving to see people on the streets helping out with shovels and tools. It reflects very well on our country and our people, and we want to contribute however we can.”

He continued, “There are people suffering greatly, and it’s very sad. Despite this, we are told to carry on, and here we are, continuing.”

Atletico currently sits fifth in La Liga with 20 points from 11 matches and is set to face 18th-placed Las Palmas. Simeone acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting that Las Palmas has improved significantly since appointing former Espanyol coach Diego Martinez.

“We have a tough match against a team that has become more formidable under their new coach,” he said. “They are strong and quick on the counter-attack, so we’ll need to manage those situations well and rely on the support of our fans, which is always crucial.”
