US Senator Christopher Van Hollen, who was born in Karachi, Pakistan, is considering a campaign for the 2028 United States presidential election. The Maryland Democrat recently confirmed his interest in entering the presidential race, highlighting a possible new direction in his political career.
Van Hollen, 67, revealed his plans during a television interview on Friday. He also dismissed speculation that he might challenge Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for the party’s leadership position.
Van Hollen Highlights Special Connection With Pakistan
Born in Karachi on January 10, 1959, Van Hollen has repeatedly acknowledged his personal connection with Pakistan. His father served as an American foreign service officer, which brought the family to different countries during his childhood.
Last year, the senator marked Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day and expressed pride in his birthplace. He also praised the generosity, kindness and determination of Pakistani people while highlighting the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and the United States.
Moreover, Van Hollen previously thanked Pakistan for helping evacuate American citizens and other individuals stranded in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in 2021.
Senator’s Political Career and Presidential Ambitions
Van Hollen entered the US Senate in January 2017 after representing Maryland’s eighth congressional district in the House of Representatives for 14 years. Before joining Congress, he served in Maryland’s state legislature.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Swarthmore College before earning a public policy master’s degree from Harvard University. Additionally, he obtained his law degree from Georgetown University in 1990.
Meanwhile, Van Hollen has attracted attention for his criticism of US military support for Israel and the Trump administration’s policies regarding Gaza.
His potential presidential campaign could bring his political positions and international experience into the 2028 election discussion.
