Google has introduced a major upgrade to Gmail called Gmail Live, powered by its Gemini AI system. The feature allows users to interact with their inbox using natural spoken language instead of traditional search typing.
The announcement was made during Google I/O 2026, where the company outlined a broader shift toward an AI-powered inbox experience. The update aims to make email management faster, more intuitive, and more conversational.
Gmail Live is designed to help users locate important information buried inside emails. This includes travel details, appointment reminders, access codes, and event information. As a result, users can retrieve key data without manually searching through long email threads.
How Gmail Live works
Gmail Live enables users to ask questions about their inbox and receive direct answers. Instead of typing keywords, users can speak or phrase requests naturally.
The system can respond to follow-up questions and adjust when users change topics mid-conversation. It also supports interruptions, making interactions feel more fluid and human-like.
During demonstrations, the tool handled queries about school trips, travel bookings, and personal schedules. It extracted relevant details such as flight information, hotel data, and event instructions from emails.
The assistant also understands context. For example, it can distinguish between similar phrases like “field trip” and “trip” to avoid confusion. This improves accuracy when searching across large inboxes.
Smarter inbox understanding and response generation
Gmail Live does more than just search. It can also identify key details hidden inside messages. This includes extracting hotel room numbers, appointment times, or contact information.
The AI can also infer meaning when full context is not explicitly stated. This allows it to answer questions even when the user does not mention exact names or terms.
Despite its advanced capabilities, traditional Gmail search will remain available. Users can choose between manual search and voice-based AI assistance depending on preference.
Google clarified that Gmail Live is an optional feature. This decision follows previous concerns raised about AI-driven changes in other Google services, where users demanded more control over automation features.
Expansion of AI Inbox capabilities
Alongside Gmail Live, Google is expanding its AI Inbox system. This upgraded inbox experience introduces several productivity tools designed to streamline daily tasks.
The system can generate draft replies based on email context. It also surfaces relevant files from Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides directly within the inbox interface.
In addition, users can manage tasks more efficiently. Individual items can be marked as completed, while important updates are automatically highlighted in a unified dashboard view.
These improvements aim to reduce clutter and help users focus on priority communications.
Voice integration extends beyond Gmail
Google is also expanding its voice-powered AI tools to other applications. Similar features are being introduced in Google Keep, allowing users to speak notes instead of typing them.
The system organizes spoken input into structured lists and reminders automatically. A similar upgrade is planned for Google Docs through a feature called Docs Live.

Availability and rollout plans
