Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has urged WNBA players to adjust their expectations of fan behaviour, arguing that growing popularity also brings criticism and pressure.
Cunningham made the remarks during an episode of her “No Hesitation” podcast while discussing the recent controversy involving Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson.
During Game 2 of the Fever-Aces playoff series, Wilson confronted a courtside fan who pointed at her after a foul call. Wilson received a technical foul but faced no further punishment from the WNBA.
Cunningham questioned the reaction to the incident and argued that players seeking the same attention and treatment as athletes in men’s sports must also accept ordinary fan interactions.
She said criticism from supporters is part of professional sports and suggested that the response to the incident had been excessive.
Cunningham also claimed that Wilson, whom she compared with NBA superstar LeBron James in terms of league stature, may have received preferential treatment because of her status. However, she said she was not calling for Wilson to be suspended.
The Fever guard also reflected on Indiana’s 2026 season, which ended with a three-game first-round playoff defeat against the Aces.
Cunningham attributed part of the team’s loss of momentum to the midseason FIBA break. She said the players remained focused on winning despite individual achievements and historic statistics.
Her comments have added another chapter to the growing debate over fan behaviour, player reactions and the increasing popularity of women’s basketball.
