Sony has reportedly ended sales of its last standalone Ultra HD Blu-ray player in Japan, marking another setback for physical media. The company’s UBP-X700/K model is no longer available through its Japanese online store, which indicates that the device will not return to stock.
The development follows several changes in Sony’s approach to physical entertainment formats. Although the company has not announced a worldwide withdrawal, the decision raises questions about the future of dedicated 4K Blu-ray players.
Sony’s Last UHD Player Disappears From Japanese Stores
The UBP-X700/K launched in Japan in May 2025 and became Sony’s final standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player in the country. According to reports, shipments ended on October 22, 2026, while the Japanese store now lists the device as unavailable with no planned restocking.
The player supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and advanced audio formats. However, Sony has not announced a replacement, leaving customers without a new dedicated UHD player from the company in Japan.
Sony previously discontinued other physical media products, including Blu-ray recorders. Consequently, the latest development strengthens concerns that the company is gradually reducing its involvement in traditional disc-based entertainment.
PlayStation 5 Remains an Alternative for Movie Fans
Following the discontinuation, the PlayStation 5 remains Sony’s main option for playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs in Japan. Nevertheless, the console primarily serves gamers and lacks Dolby Vision support for disc playback, which may disappoint some home cinema enthusiasts.
Importantly, Sony has not confirmed that it will discontinue all standalone UHD players worldwide. Models and remaining stock may still be available in other markets, including the United States and Europe.
Meanwhile, Panasonic remains a major manufacturer offering dedicated 4K Blu-ray players. As streaming services continue expanding, Sony’s latest move highlights the challenges facing physical media and the shrinking choice available to movie collectors.
