PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is facing a possible no-confidence move amid reported differences within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership, party leader Sher Afzal Marwat has claimed.
Marwat said PTI founder Imran Khan conveyed a message about Afridi through his lawyer, Salman Safdar. According to Marwat, Khan believed the planned Islamabad march could be beyond Afridi’s capacity and wanted him to step down.
Marwat further claimed that members of Bushra Bibi’s family and Nooreen Niazi had also confirmed messages concerning Afridi.
According to his account, Khan discussed Afridi’s performance with Nooreen Niazi in Bushra Bibi’s presence and expressed strong dissatisfaction with Afridi, Salman Akram and two other individuals.
Marwat alleged that Nooreen Niazi told Khan that former KP chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur had formed a pressure group against Afridi. She reportedly said around 35 provincial lawmakers were prepared to oppose the chief minister.
Marwat said Khan asked about the lawmakers’ demands. According to him, Nooreen Niazi responded that the lawmakers believed Afridi was unable to effectively lead the political movement.
Marwat further claimed that Khan agreed with their criticism and believed Afridi’s provincial government could face difficulties regardless of whether PTI succeeded in holding its Islamabad march.
He also said Khan would not pardon those responsible if the party failed to carry out the planned march.
The claims come amid an existing legal dispute over Afridi’s appointment. The Federal Constitutional Court has admitted a petition challenging his election and has sought responses from the relevant parties, with further proceedings scheduled for October.
