Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has defended the provincial government’s decision to pursue a peaceful protest after exhausting constitutional, legal and democratic avenues. He made the remarks while addressing participants of the ongoing long march led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Afridi said he had approached every relevant forum after becoming chief minister to seek a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan. He added that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly also passed a resolution, but authorities still did not facilitate the meeting.
Afridi Highlights Demands for Imran Khan
The chief minister said demands for Imran Khan’s medical treatment and a meeting with him do not violate the Constitution. Moreover, he argued that Khan could receive relief if courts hear the relevant cases according to law.
Afridi said the long march aims to present these demands peacefully rather than create confrontation. He also stated that PTI had published a draft of its demands on social media for public review.
KP Chief Minister Calls for Peaceful Movement
The PTI-led convoy began its journey from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is moving towards Islamabad. Authorities, however, have warned that the march will not be allowed to enter the federal capital, while security arrangements remain in place.
Afridi said the protest would continue peacefully and challenged critics to identify any demand that violates the law or Constitution. He added that the movement could be called off if any demand is proven illegal or unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged PTI to end the march and return to political dialogue. The federal government and PTI have remained divided over the protest and several political and legal demands.
