Deputy Chairman Senate Syedal Khan Nasir has said that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in Pakistan’s economic progress. He emphasized that empowering young entrepreneurs is essential for sustainable national development.
Nasir stated that Pakistan’s future depends on transforming youth into job creators rather than job seekers. He said modern skills, technology and financial support can help startups grow into international brands.
He expressed these views while addressing the International SMEs Excellence Awards 2026. The Rawalpindi Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industries organized the event.
SMEs Drive Economy and Employment
Nasir highlighted the importance of SMEs in the national economy. He noted that more than 7.14 million active SMEs operate across Pakistan.
According to him, the sector contributes 40 percent to the country’s GDP. It also accounts for 30 percent of exports and over 80 percent of non-agricultural employment.
He said supporting small businesses strengthens the entire economic ecosystem. Therefore, financial and technical assistance remains crucial for long-term growth.
Calls for Easier Financing and Women’s Inclusion
The Deputy Chairman Senate stressed the need for affordable loans for small traders. He urged authorities to ensure that financial initiatives reach businesses at the grassroots level.
Nasir also described women’s entrepreneurship as an economic necessity. He said greater participation of women in business could significantly boost exports and foreign exchange earnings.
Furthermore, he encouraged the use of digital technology and e-commerce to connect Pakistani products with global markets. He assured the business community of Parliament’s support for business-friendly policies.
At the end of the ceremony, Nasir congratulated award recipients for their achievements. He also praised the event organizers for recognizing excellence in the SME sector.
