Microsoft has issued a fresh reminder to millions of former Skype users, warning that all remaining Skype data will be permanently deleted in January 2026. The company is urging users to log in and take action before the deadline to avoid losing important chats, contacts, and call history stored on the platform.
Skype, once one of the worldโs most popular communication apps, was shut down earlier in 2025 as Microsoft shifted its full focus to Microsoft Teams. While the service no longer operates, user data has remained accessible for a limited transition period.
Skypeโs Rise and Eventual Shutdown
Skype launched in 2003 and quickly became a global leader in online voice and video calling. Microsoft acquired the platform in 2011, integrating it into its wider ecosystem. At its peak in the mid-2010s, Skype had more than 300 million monthly active users worldwide.
However, its popularity declined over time. Mobile-first apps such as WhatsApp and Zoom, along with Microsoftโs own Teams platform, gradually replaced Skype for both personal and professional communication. As usage dropped, Microsoft decided to retire Skype and focus on Teams as its primary communication service.
Microsoft officially ended Skype services on May 5, 2023. Despite the shutdown, the company allowed users to retain access to their stored data for an extended grace period.
What Data Is at Risk
Microsoft has confirmed that Skype data will remain available only until January 2026. This includes chat histories, call logs, shared files, and saved contact details. Users must either export their data or delete it before the deadline.
The company stated, โYour Skype data will be available until January 2026 for you to export or delete.โ Microsoft also clarified that users who sign in to Microsoft Teams Free before the deadline will continue to have access to their Skype call and chat history through Teams.
If users do not take any action, Microsoft will automatically delete all Skype data in January 2026. Once deleted, the data cannot be recovered under any circumstances.
What Users Should Do Now
With the new year approaching, Microsoft is advising users to act quickly. Former Skype users should log into their accounts, review stored data, and decide whether to export or remove it. This is especially important for users who may have years of personal conversations, professional contacts, or shared files saved on the platform.
Microsoft has emphasized that waiting until the last moment could result in permanent data loss. The company is encouraging users to safeguard their information as soon as possible.
As Skype officially fades into digital history, this final deadline marks the last opportunity for users to preserve memories and records from a service that once defined online communication.
