Singapore has announced a major family support package worth more than $55,000 for every Singaporean child.
The financial assistance will be provided to parents from the child’s birth until the age of 17.
The initiative was announced by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong as the government seeks to address the country’s sharply declining birth rate.
New Support Package for Every Child
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said Singapore already provides financial assistance to families when a child is born.
However, he said the existing system was complicated because the amount of support depended on the child’s birth order.
Under the new system, every Singaporean child will receive financial support regardless of whether they are the first, second or subsequent child.
The government plans to deliver the new support through five stages.
Parents will receive $7,880 during the first 12 months following the child’s birth.
Additional financial assistance will then be provided throughout the child’s first 16 years. Annual payments will help families manage the rising costs of raising children.
Government Contributions Continue Into Teen Years
The package also includes contributions to the child’s Child Development Account.
Another government contribution will be provided when the child reaches the age of 16.
Additional assistance will be offered when the child turns 17. This support will help families meet higher education expenses.
The government says the revised system will make family assistance simpler and more predictable for parents.
It is also designed to reduce some of the financial pressures associated with raising children.
Singapore Faces Record-Low Fertility Rate
The new measures come as Singapore faces a serious demographic challenge.
The country’s fertility rate has fallen to a record low of 0.87 births per woman.
That figure is significantly below the replacement fertility rate of around 2.1 births per woman, which is generally considered necessary to maintain a stable population without relying on migration.
Singapore has introduced various family-friendly policies in recent years to encourage couples to have children.
The latest package is intended to strengthen those efforts by providing broader and more consistent financial assistance.
The government hopes the simplified support system will encourage more couples to start families and help address the country’s long-term population challenges.
