KARACHI: The Sindh Transport Department has submitted a summary to the provincial cabinet seeking approval to purchase 500 electric buses as part of plans to expand public transport services across the province, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Wednesday.
Memon said the government would introduce the electric buses in different cities in phases after receiving cabinet approval.
He said the provincial government wanted to ensure that modern public transport facilities were not limited to Karachi. Consequently, authorities have continued expanding the People’s Bus Service and introducing routes aimed at providing affordable and improved transportation.
50 Double-Decker Buses to Arrive by November 30
Meanwhile, Memon said 50 double-decker buses would arrive in Sindh by November 30 and operate on different routes.
He said the buses would increase passenger capacity and strengthen the province’s existing public transport network.
Furthermore, Memon said the recently launched People’s Bus Service in Qambar-Shahdadkot had received an encouraging public response, with residents of Qambar, Shahdadkot and surrounding areas welcoming the service.
He described the proposed electric bus fleet as an important addition that could help address growing transport challenges.
Sindh Also Plans Pink Taxi Scheme for Women
The electric bus plan forms part of Sindh’s broader push towards electric transportation.
In June, Memon announced plans to introduce an EV Pink Taxi Scheme exclusively for women, following the launch of the Pink Scooter programme.
He said the government would provide a dedicated fleet of pink taxis for female passengers, with further details to be announced later.
Additionally, Memon said authorities had instructed traffic police to act when men were found using scooters distributed to women under the Pink Scooter Scheme.
The minister has said the government intends to expand transport options while increasing women’s access to dedicated mobility services across Sindh.
