Sindh has been placed on high alert as nearly 700,000 cusecs of water are expected to reach Panjnad within the next 24 hours. The development has prompted urgent safety measures to prevent large-scale damage.
Preparations to Handle Flood Situation
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that the province has the capacity to safely manage water levels of up to 800,000 cusecs. He assured that the administration is fully prepared to address the looming threat.
Speaking at the Rain and Flood Emergency Centre, Shah also noted that Karachi has been equipped for the expected rainfall tomorrow.
Rising Water Levels in Indus River
According to the chief minister, around 217,000 cusecs from Taunsa will enter the Indus River, raising concerns about downstream impacts. He further added that water levels at Guddu Barrage are expected to peak on September 9.
This surge has intensified monitoring and led to precautionary evacuations across flood-prone districts.
Evacuations and Relief Measures
Over 128,000 people have already been shifted to safer areas as part of the government’s proactive evacuation plan. Shah stated that more than 324,000 residents could potentially be affected by the floodwaters if the situation escalates.
Villages in frontline areas have been cleared, while a second phase of evacuations is set to be completed within the next 48 hours.
Relief Camps and Livestock Protection
To support displaced families, relief supplies have been dispatched to warehouses in Sukkur. Camps have been geo-tagged for effective management and transparency. Additionally, veterinary vaccination facilities have been established to safeguard livestock, which remains a critical source of livelihood in rural Sindh.
The Sindh government’s early warning system, coupled with mass evacuations and relief planning, reflects a comprehensive strategy to minimize flood-related damage. Authorities continue to monitor water inflows and rainfall patterns to adapt their response measures.
With water levels expected to peak in the coming days, officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders. The government has pledged to provide continued assistance, relief supplies, and medical facilities to all those impacted.
