ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Iqbal Detho, has issued a directive to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to expedite the issuance of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) to transgender individuals.

This decision follows complaints from the transgender community about difficulties they faced while trying to obtain CNICs.
Transgender community representatives had approached Chairman Iqbal Detho to highlight the challenges they encountered during the CNIC application process. In response, Mr. Detho promptly wrote a letter to the NADRA regional head in Karachi, citing court rulings and laws that require fair and equal treatment for transgender individuals at NADRA centers in the province.
Iqbal Detho underscored that the transgender community in Pakistan is already marginalized and often denied their constitutional rights. He emphasized that withholding CNICs from transgender individuals violates several fundamental rights guaranteed to all citizens, including the right to dignity (Article 14), the right to life (Article 9), and the right to equality before the law (Article 25).
