KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday suspended the University of Karachi’s notification cancelling the law degree of Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.
A two-member SHC bench, comprising Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Mohammad Abdur Rahman, restrained the university from taking further action. The court also barred the varsity from relying on the recommendations of the Syndicate and Fairmen’s Committee against the judge.
Judge Challenges KU’s Decision
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri approached the SHC, seeking to declare Karachi University’s notification null and void. He argued that the cancellation of his degree was unjustified and unlawful.
During the hearing, Barrister Salahuddin, representing Justice Jahangiri, urged the court to suspend the university’s order until a reply was formally submitted. He emphasized that the notification damaged the judge’s professional credibility.
Registrar Requests More Time
Professor Imran Siddiqui, Registrar of the University of Karachi, appeared before the court and sought additional time to file a response. He explained that the university had only received the court’s notice two days earlier.
“How much time do you need to submit a reply?” Justice Kalhoro asked. The bench then considered the request.
Accepting the registrar’s plea, the SHC granted more time and adjourned the hearing. The court, however, maintained its order suspending the university’s notification.
Case to Continue in SHC
The suspension provides temporary relief to Justice Jahangiri as the case proceeds. The SHC will now review the university’s response in the coming hearings before making a final decision.
Legal observers believe the case could set a precedent regarding university powers and judicial accountability. The outcome may also impact future disputes involving academic records of public office holders.
