The Sindh government has taken a decisive step by imposing a ban on the use of Sheesha and e-cigarettes (vape) in public places, signaling a commitment to enforce the Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance 2002.
The directive issued by the Sindh Health Department extends to Commissioners of various divisions, including major cities such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, and Sukkur.
This comprehensive ban encompasses public spaces such as hotels, restaurants, parks, cafes, and picnic points, emphasizing the need to create a smoke-free environment. The health authorities have expressed concern over the potential nuisance posed by sheesha, particularly for parents of teenagers, and the apprehension that its usage may disturb public peace.

The notification recognizes the existing ordinance but acknowledges that its implementation has not been entirely in line with its intended purpose. In response to this, the health department’s directive serves as a call to action, urging authorities to ensure a strict ban on sheesha and e-cigarettes. Authorities are empowered to take appropriate actions against those who violate the ban.
This move aligns with global efforts to regulate and restrict the use of tobacco and related products in public spaces, aiming to protect public health and minimize the harmful effects of smoking.
By issuing this ban, the Sindh government takes a proactive stance in promoting a healthier and smoke-free environment for its residents. The effectiveness of this measure will depend on the vigilant enforcement of the ban by relevant authorities.
