The Sindh government has announced plans to provide higher education scholarships for transgender students, opening new opportunities for individuals facing financial and social barriers to education.
The initiative will operate through the Sindh Education Endowment Fund (SEEF). It aims to help deserving students pursue university education and develop professional careers.
The announcement followed a meeting between Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah and representatives of the transgender community. The delegation highlighted difficulties involving university admissions, educational expenses and discrimination.
The meeting included Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Councillor Shahzadi Rai, Gender Interactive Alliance representative Zahrish Khanzadi and Sarbang Society Executive Director Kami Chaudhry.
During the discussions, the education minister confirmed that special approval would be sought from the SEEF board to provide financial assistance to transgender students. However, scholarship amounts, eligibility criteria and application deadlines have not yet been announced.
The minister also revealed that the provincial government is finalizing a comprehensive Transgender Education Policy. Community representatives will participate in consultations before the policy moves through the approval process.
Shah further highlighted Sindh’s existing employment quota for transgender individuals. He emphasized that qualified candidates should have equal opportunities to pursue teaching and other professional careers.
The proposed initiative seeks to improve educational inclusion while reducing financial difficulties that prevent transgender students from completing higher education.
Students interested in applying must await an official notification outlining application procedures and qualification requirements.
The next major step will be SEEF board approval, which will determine how the scholarship programme moves toward implementation.
