Falling shrapnel damaged an administrative building belonging to Saudi oil giant Aramco in Riyadh following an attempted missile attack on Sunday. Saudi authorities confirmed the incident but reported no injuries or fatalities.
The attack caused limited damage to the building, according to an official statement from the Saudi Energy Ministry. Meanwhile, emergency teams responded quickly and began taking necessary security measures following the incident.
Saudi Air Defences Intercept Missiles Targeting Riyadh
The incident occurred hours after the Saudi-led coalition announced that its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed missiles targeting Riyadh and other regions.
Authorities reported intercepting two ballistic missiles launched towards the Saudi capital. Additionally, the coalition confirmed that air defence systems destroyed cruise missiles targeting Riyadh and the kingdom’s southern regions.
Residents reported hearing several loud explosions across the capital during the early hours of Sunday. Consequently, Saudi Civil Defence issued emergency warnings through its early-warning system, advising residents about potential security threats.
Authorities later lifted the warnings after confirming that the immediate danger had passed.
Rising Tensions Between Saudi Arabia and Houthis
The latest incident comes amid escalating military tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement. The group has repeatedly launched missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi territory, including airports, energy facilities and other important infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia has also carried out airstrikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. Moreover, the renewed confrontations have increased concerns about regional security and the safety of critical energy infrastructure.
The latest escalation follows reports of Saudi airstrikes near Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, where Houthi officials claimed that dozens of people had died.
Meanwhile, the absence of casualties in the Riyadh incident has limited its immediate human impact, although the damage highlights continuing security concerns across the region.
