Indian singer Shilpa Rao has become the centre of a growing controversy after organisers abruptly cut off her microphone during a performance at Mumbai’s Bollywood Music Project.
The incident took place on October 24 at Jio World Gardens during the festival’s 10th anniversary event. Rao was reportedly performing when her microphone and stage lights were switched off to make way for the next act.
Consequently, the incident triggered criticism from festival-goers and social media users, who questioned how the event’s schedule had been managed.
Anu Malik and Ada Malik Draw Criticism
As the controversy gained momentum, online criticism also turned towards veteran music composer Anu Malik and his daughter, fashion designer Ada Malik.
According to reports, Anu Malik’s performance was followed by a dance act featuring Ada Malik to the song “Ding Dong Ding Dole.” Some social media users alleged that earlier performances contributed to delays in the festival schedule.
However, the available reports do not establish that either Anu Malik or Ada Malik was directly responsible for Rao’s performance being cut short.
Organisers Apologise Amid Growing Outrage
Festival organisers reportedly issued an apology, citing logistical challenges, delays involving sound checks, and strict venue curfew restrictions.
Meanwhile, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) condemned the treatment of Rao and offered legal support if required. The incident has also renewed debate about professional standards and fair treatment of performers at large music festivals.
Rao later shared an emotional message about the abrupt end to her performance. Although the organisers have acknowledged the incident, criticism continues over how the situation was handled.
Ultimately, the controversy has raised questions about scheduling, communication, and respect for artists performing at major live events.
