Preparations for global pop star Shakiraโs upcoming concert in Rio de Janeiro have been overshadowed by tragedy after a construction worker died during stage setup for her show.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, while crews were assembling structures for the โTodo Mundo no Rioโ concert series, a major annual event held at Copacabana Beach. According to organisers, the accident happened during the installation of stage equipment, resulting in fatal injuries to a worker involved in the setup process.
Accident during stage construction
Event organisers confirmed that the worker suffered severe crushing injuries after becoming trapped in a lifting system. As a result, emergency teams rushed to the scene and provided immediate medical assistance before transporting him to hospital. However, he later died due to the extent of his injuries.
Furthermore, local fire authorities reported that eyewitness accounts helped reconstruct the circumstances of the incident, although investigations are still ongoing. The identity of the victim has not been publicly released.
Organisers and Shakira respond to incident
The โTodo Mundo no Rioโ team expressed condolences and said they are supporting the victimโs family as well as the company involved in the stage construction. In addition, they confirmed that safety protocols are being reviewed following the tragedy.
Shakira, who is currently on her โLas Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour,โ also issued a statement expressing deep sorrow. She extended condolences to the workerโs family, friends, and colleagues, describing the loss as heartbreaking.
Despite the incident, the concert is still scheduled to take place this weekend as part of the free public event series, which has previously featured major international artists.
