Sindh police have suspended seven officers over alleged negligence following violent protests outside the US Consulate in Karachi. Authorities took action after demonstrators breached the outer security cordon and vandalised property during unrest linked to US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho ordered the suspensions after reviewing complaints of security lapses, mismanagement and financial losses. Among those suspended are Keamari SSP Amjad Shaikh, the Keamari SDPO, several station house officers, and the officer in charge of the Foreign Security Cell. Departmental inquiries have also begun.
Deadly Protests and Widespread Unrest
The violence erupted after reports confirmed the killing of Iranโs Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in US-Israeli strikes. As a result, protests broke out across Pakistan.
In Karachi alone, at least 10 protesters died during clashes near the consulate. Demonstrators set a traffic police post on fire under the Sultanabad bridge and blocked major roads leading to the diplomatic mission. Police used tear gas near the Central Police Office on II Chundrigar Road to disperse crowds. Another protest took place at Native Jetty Bridge.
Meanwhile, unrest spread beyond Karachi. Eleven fatalities were reported in Skardu, while two deaths occurred in Islamabad. Therefore, the nationwide death toll reached 23.
Government Orders Accountability and Tightened Security
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar termed the incident โserious and unacceptable.โ He warned that further removals would follow if investigations reveal additional negligence.
A six-member high-level committee, led by the Counter Terrorism Department chief, will submit a detailed report within seven days. Moreover, officials directed the Special Security Unit to lead enhanced security measures across Karachi.
Authorities have now tightened security at sensitive installations. In addition, the Rapid Response Force and K-9 units will remain fully mobilised. Officials also ordered SSPs to maintain visible field presence to prevent future lapses.
