Coordinated Attacks on Police Station and Banks Thwarted
Pakistanโs security forces have successfully foiled a major terrorist assault in Balochistanโs Kharan district, killing 12 Indian-sponsored militants during an ongoing clearance operation. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the development on Friday, describing the incident as a coordinated attempt to destabilise the area through multiple high-profile attacks.
According to ISPR, the incident took place on January 15, 2026, when a group of 15 to 20 terrorists belonging to what it termed โFitna al-Hindustanโ launched simultaneous attacks across Kharan city. The attackers targeted key state institutions, including the Kharan City Police Station, the National Bank of Pakistan, and a branch of Habib Bank Limited.
The militants managed to loot approximately Rs3.4 million from the two banks before security forces mounted a rapid and effective response. Officials said the attackers attempted to create chaos and fear by striking multiple locations within a short span of time.
Hostage Attempt Foiled as Clearance Operation Continues
ISPR stated that the terrorists also tried to take police personnel hostage at the Kharan City Police Station. However, the attempt was swiftly foiled due to the timely action of security forces and law enforcement agencies deployed in the area.
โSecurity forces effectively responded and engaged the terrorists, forcing them to retreat,โ the militaryโs media wing said. It added that during the subsequent clearance operation, 12 terrorists were neutralised in three separate engagements across the city and its outskirts.
No casualties among civilians or security personnel were reported during the operation, according to initial assessments. Authorities said the presence of security forces and quick coordination between police and military units prevented a potentially larger tragedy.
A sanitisation operation is still underway in surrounding areas to ensure that no remaining militants escape or regroup. Security officials believe some attackers may have attempted to flee after the initial encounters.
Azm-e-Istehkam Drive Against Terrorism Reaffirmed
ISPR reiterated Pakistanโs resolve to eliminate terrorism backed by foreign elements. The statement said the ongoing counterterrorism drive is being carried out under the national vision of โAzm-e-Istehkam,โ which was approved by the Federal Apex Committee as part of the National Action Plan.
โA relentless counterterrorism campaign by the security forces and law enforcement agencies of Pakistan will continue at full pace,โ the statement said. It added that the aim is to completely wipe out the menace of foreign-sponsored terrorism from the country.
Security analysts say the foiled attack highlights the continued threat posed by militant networks operating with external support. They also point to improved intelligence coordination and faster response times as key factors behind the successful operation in Kharan.
Local authorities have increased security across sensitive installations in Balochistan following the incident. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as the clearance operation continues.
The incident once again underscores Pakistanโs ongoing security challenges in border regions. However, officials maintain that such attempts will continue to be met with decisive and forceful responses.
