Qatar Airways is setting a new standard in the aviation industry by launching the world’s first Starlink-equipped Boeing 777, transforming in-flight connectivity.
On October 22, 2024, passengers on the Doha-to-London flight enjoyed seamless internet access at 35,000 feet, marking a significant milestone in air travel.
This initiative positions Qatar Airways as the largest and most innovative carrier in the MENA region to implement Starlink’s ultra-high-speed, low-latency internet service across its fleet.
Developed by SpaceX, Starlink utilizes a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide reliable connectivity even over oceans and remote areas. Passengers can now experience download speeds of up to 350 Mbps, enabling activities such as video calls, streaming, and gaming during flights.
“This milestone emphasizes our dedication to enhancing the in-flight experience,” stated Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer. The airline plans to equip 12 Boeing 777-300s with Starlink technology by the end of the year and aims for complete fleet integration by 2025, ahead of schedule for its Airbus A350s.
The introduction of Starlink also marks several firsts for Qatar Airways, including being the first and largest airline in the MENA region to deploy this technology on widebody aircraft.
Unlike traditional paid Wi-Fi services, Starlink will be complimentary for all passengers, replacing older systems and ensuring seamless connectivity from gate to gate.
During the inaugural flight, CEO Al-Meer showcased Starlink’s capabilities with a live video call to Elon Musk, who praised the service’s quality and potential. Passengers, especially frequent flyers, have expressed their enthusiasm for this advancement, highlighting the service’s ease of use and reliability.
As Qatar Airways rolls out Starlink fleet-wide, it joins a select group of airlines globally offering advanced in-flight connectivity, reinforcing its position as a leader in aviation innovation.
