Apple’s latest iOS 18.2 update introduces a major change for iPhone users, allowing them to set third-party apps as the default for calls and messages.
WhatsApp has now updated its platform to support this feature, enabling users to make it their primary communication app.
How to Set WhatsApp as the Default App for Calls and Messages
With this update, iPhones can now use WhatsApp by default for phone calls and text messages instead of Apple’s native apps.
To activate this feature:
- Update your iPhone to iOS 18.2.
- Navigate to Settings > Apps > Default Apps.
- Select WhatsApp as the default app for calls and messaging.
Expanded Default App Options in iOS 18.2
Originally introduced to comply with European Union regulations, Apple has now made this functionality available to users worldwide.
In addition to calls and messages, iOS 18.2 also allows users to set default apps for:
- Web browsing
- Call filtering
- Translations
- Password management
- Payments (available in select regions)
- Keyboards
- Maps (currently for EU users only)
Update WhatsApp to Access the Feature
This new capability is now available to all WhatsApp users, not just beta testers. Ensure your app is updated to the latest version to start using WhatsApp as your default calling and messaging app.
