The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen intercepted and destroyed a drone heading towards Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Friday, October 16, amid escalating military tensions across the region.
The coalition announced the interception in a brief statement but initially provided limited information about the drone’s origin, intended target or potential damage. The incident came as Saudi Arabia faced a series of reported missile and drone attacks targeting different parts of the kingdom.
Border Region Reports Artillery Shelling
Meanwhile, Houthi-affiliated media reported artillery shelling in parts of Al-Dhaher district in Yemen’s northern Saada province, which borders Saudi Arabia.
The developments highlighted growing security concerns along the Saudi-Yemeni border. However, authorities did not immediately establish a direct connection between the reported shelling and the intercepted drone.
The latest interception followed other aerial threats reported across Saudi Arabia during the week. On Thursday, coalition forces also announced that they had intercepted a cruise missile over the Madinah region.
Rising Tensions Raise Regional Security Concerns
The incidents occurred amid renewed hostilities between the Saudi-led coalition and Yemen’s Houthi movement. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree denied that his group had carried out attacks against Saudi territory on Thursday.
Earlier, coalition forces reported intercepting a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh. Falling debris reportedly injured one person and caused minor property damage in the Saudi capital.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthis since 2015. The group has controlled Sanaa and several other parts of Yemen since 2014.
Furthermore, the latest escalation follows a period of relative calm after a United Nations-brokered truce began in April 2022. Renewed attacks have increased concerns about regional stability, civilian safety and the security of critical infrastructure.
