Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Washington on Monday for talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to Saudi Arabia’s state-run news agency.
The visit comes as tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement continue to intensify, raising concerns about further escalation in the region.
According to the Saudi news agency, Faisal bin Farhan and Rubio are expected to discuss bilateral relations between Riyadh and Washington. Their agenda will also include major regional and international developments, although specific details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed.
The diplomatic meeting comes after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly requested military assistance from the United States to counter Houthi attacks.
Washington, however, declined to carry out direct military strikes against the Houthis. Instead, the United States agreed to provide Saudi Arabia with intelligence and targeting assistance as Riyadh seeks to strengthen its response to the escalating threats.
The Houthis, who are supported by Iran, have carried out attacks linked to the wider regional conflict, targeting Saudi interests and other strategic locations. Their activities have increased concerns about the security of energy infrastructure and important maritime routes in the region.
Saudi Arabia has previously sought stronger international support to protect its territory and vital economic infrastructure from attacks originating in Yemen.
The latest visit by Faisal bin Farhan therefore comes at a sensitive time for Saudi-US relations. The discussions are expected to cover security cooperation, regional stability and the broader consequences of the conflict involving Iran and its regional allies.
The talks also highlight Washington’s continuing diplomatic engagement with Riyadh despite its decision not to directly launch strikes against the Houthis.
