The Saudi-led military coalition announced on Thursday that it had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile over the Madinah region of Saudi Arabia, amid escalating security tensions across the kingdom.
Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki confirmed the interception in a statement shared on social media and published by Saudi state media. However, officials did not identify who launched the missile or disclose its intended target.
The incident comes as Saudi Arabia faces an increase in missile and drone threats linked to the ongoing conflict involving Yemen’s Houthi movement.
Missile Interception Raises Security Concerns
Madinah is home to the Prophet’s Mosque and ranks among the holiest cities in Islam. The reported interception has drawn attention because the Houthis had previously pledged not to target the holy cities of Madinah and Makkah.
The coalition did not immediately provide details about possible casualties or damage resulting from the incident. Meanwhile, the Houthis denied responsibility for the reported attack.
The development followed another interception earlier on Thursday, when Saudi forces reported destroying a drone over the kingdom’s Eastern Province, a major oil-producing region.
Regional Tensions Continue to Escalate
Saudi Arabia has faced repeated missile and drone threats as fighting involving the Houthis intensifies. Recent incidents have raised concerns about the security of major cities, energy infrastructure and critical transport facilities.
The coalition has been supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthis since 2015. The group has controlled Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and several other areas since 2014.
Saudi authorities continue to monitor potential threats and respond to aerial attacks. However, officials have yet to provide further information about Thursday’s missile interception or confirm responsibility for the incident.
