MAKKAH/MADINAH: Saudi Arabia has introduced a pilot self-driving RoboBus shuttle service inside the courtyard of Quba Mosque as part of the Kingdomโs broader effort to promote smart and sustainable transportation systems.
The Transport General Authority launched the initiative in partnership with the Madinah Region Development Authority. Officials say the project aims to improve mobility around major religious sites while supporting Saudi Arabiaโs ongoing technological transformation.
AI-Powered RoboBus Designed for Smart Mobility
The RoboBus is an electric, fully autonomous minibus capable of carrying up to 20 passengers at a time. The vehicle operates using advanced artificial intelligence technology supported by LiDAR systems, modern sensors, and high-resolution cameras.
According to officials, these technologies allow the shuttle to move safely through crowded areas around the mosque while protecting both passengers and pedestrians. In addition, the automated system is designed to provide smooth and efficient transportation for worshippers and visitors.
Authorities also explained that the dedicated route spans nearly 700 meters within the mosqueโs inner courtyard. Consequently, the shuttle service aims to improve accessibility and reduce congestion in one of Madinahโs most visited religious locations.
Saudi Arabia Expands Smart Transport Projects
The pilot programme will continue for 60 days while officials monitor operational performance, service quality, and passenger experience. During the testing phase, authorities will also evaluate how effectively the autonomous vehicle integrates with surrounding infrastructure.
Furthermore, teams will collect field data through advanced digital mapping systems to support future expansion plans. Saudi officials believe the project could pave the way for wider deployment of self-driving public transport across cities in the Kingdom.
The initiative reflects Saudi Arabiaโs growing focus on innovation, sustainability, and smart urban mobility solutions under its long-term development goals.
