RIYADH: Saudi Arabia intercepted another wave of drones on Saturday as tensions with Yemen’s Houthi forces intensified. Meanwhile, Egypt signaled its readiness to help defend the kingdom against further attacks.
Saudi military officials confirmed that four drones were intercepted and destroyed over Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and southern regions.
The latest interceptions followed repeated Houthi missile and drone strikes targeting Saudi oil facilities, transportation hubs, and other strategic infrastructure.
Last week, an attack on Riyadh’s airport reportedly killed 13 people, raising concerns about regional security.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Cairo could take necessary defensive measures if Saudi leaders requested assistance.
However, Sisi emphasized that Egypt was not seeking military confrontation or involvement in another regional conflict.
Egypt’s parliament was scheduled to hold an emergency session on Sunday to discuss the worsening situation.
Meanwhile, Houthi officials accused Saudi Arabia of launching 53 airstrikes across Yemen within 24 hours. They claimed the strikes caused numerous casualties.
Houthi-linked media also reported that attacks on residential areas killed 12 people and injured more than 30 others. These allegations remain independently unverified.
Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of supporting the renewed Houthi offensive. Tehran denies encouraging the escalation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for a comprehensive political settlement and reiterated Tehran’s offer to mediate.
However, Yemen’s internationally recognized government rejected Iranian mediation, accusing Tehran of involvement in the conflict.
The escalating violence has disrupted travel and education. Saudi authorities extended remote learning in Riyadh and Diriyah, while foreign embassies issued travel warnings.
The developments have heightened fears of a wider regional confrontation as diplomatic efforts struggle to contain the crisis.
