Saudi Arabia has executed a Pakistani national in the Makkah region after a court convicted him of smuggling heroin into the kingdom.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Interior, authorities investigated the case and referred it to the relevant court. The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to death.
The Supreme Court upheld the sentence, and a royal order authorised its implementation, the ministry said. Officials did not disclose the man’s identity or specify the exact date of his execution.
Saudi Authorities Warn Against Drug Smuggling
The Saudi Ministry of Interior reiterated that people convicted of drug smuggling would face severe punishment. Authorities maintain strict penalties for narcotics-related offences under the kingdom’s laws. Drug trafficking cases involving foreign nationals have also drawn attention to the use of capital punishment in Saudi Arabia. Pakistani citizens have faced execution in several cases involving heroin smuggling.
Separate Case Sees Death Sentence Overturned
In a separate development, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anojan. He had been convicted over a social media post that authorities considered blasphemous. Sri Lankan Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra said the government had appealed against the sentence.
Hemachandra attributed the reversal to sustained diplomatic and legal efforts by Sri Lankan authorities.
The two cases involve separate charges and legal proceedings. The latest execution highlights the severe consequences of drug-smuggling convictions in Saudi Arabia, while the overturned sentence marks a different outcome in the Sri Lankan national’s case.
