A Saudi airport worker risked his life to rescue passengers during the attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Despite suffering injuries, Mohammed Saleh Al-Yami repeatedly returned to dangerous areas to help travellers escape and assist the wounded.
Al-Yami works for Saudi Ground Services. His actions during the emergency have drawn praise for his courage and determination to protect passengers.
Worker Returns to Danger to Help Travellers
Al-Yami rushed towards the terminal after an explosion struck the airport. He found passengers running for safety amid smoke, flames and confusion.
However, he did not leave the scene after sustaining injuries. Instead, he returned to help evacuate passengers from an arriving aircraft.
He helped move around 38 passengers and 11 crew members to safety. Moreover, he assisted vulnerable travellers who needed additional support during the evacuation.
Al-Yami carried an elderly woman to a safe area. He also guided a blind man and a passenger with paralysis away from danger.
First Aid for Injured Passengers
The airport worker continued helping people as panic spread through the terminal. Meanwhile, families searched for relatives amid the smoke and debris.
During the emergency, Al-Yami noticed a family whose mother had suffered serious injuries. He used his first-aid training to dress her wounds before moving on to help others.
His efforts came at a personal cost. Al-Yami later underwent three operations on his back and spent several days recovering in hospital.
Nevertheless, his response demonstrated the role airport staff can play during emergencies. Their knowledge of terminal layouts and evacuation procedures can help passengers reach safety quickly.
Courage Earns Recognition
Al-Yami’s actions have received recognition from Saudi officials and his employer. Princess Reema bint Bandar, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, was among those who acknowledged his efforts.
Saudi Ground Services CEO Mohammed Mazi also visited him in hospital alongside company representatives. Mazi praised Al-Yami’s courage and his commitment to helping passengers despite his injuries.
The incident highlights the risks airport employees face during attacks on civilian infrastructure. It also shows how trained staff can support evacuations and provide immediate assistance when emergencies unfold.
