The United States has imposed new sanctions on a Chinese refinery over its purchase of Iranian oil. The move comes amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Moreover, the action coincides with an upcoming round of talks between Washington and Tehran. These developments highlight the complex balance between diplomacy and economic pressure.
Refinery and Shipping Network Targeted
The US Treasury Department identified Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery as a key entity. Officials said the refinery has purchased large volumes of Iranian crude oil.
Additionally, authorities targeted a broader network linked to oil transportation. Around 40 shipping companies and vessels have also been sanctioned.
These entities are believed to operate as part of Iranโs so-called shadow fleet. This network plays a significant role in moving restricted oil supplies.
Focus on Iranโs Oil Trade Channels
The sanctions aim to disrupt Iranโs oil export mechanisms. By targeting major buyers and transport systems, the US seeks to limit revenue streams.
Furthermore, the action reflects ongoing efforts to enforce restrictions on Iranian energy exports. These measures remain central to US policy toward Iran.
China Responds to US Measures
China has strongly criticised the sanctions. Officials described them as unilateral and opposed their impact on normal trade activities.
In addition, the Chinese embassy in Washington issued a statement urging restraint. It called on the United States to avoid politicising trade and technology matters.
“We call on the US to stop politicising trade and sci-tech issues and using them as a weapon and a tool and stop abusing various kinds of sanctions to hit Chinese companies,” a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy said in a statement.
Therefore, the response highlights growing friction between the two global powers.
Previous Sanctions on Chinese Firms
The United States has previously taken similar actions against Chinese companies. Last year, sanctions were imposed on multiple refining groups.
These included Hebei Xinhai Chemical Group, Shandong Shouguang Luqing Petrochemical, and Shandong Shengxing Chemical.
Such measures demonstrate a continued focus on limiting Iranโs oil trade partnerships.
Impact on Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
Meanwhile, the sanctions come at a sensitive time for diplomacy. The United States and Iran are preparing for another round of discussions.
Consequently, the move may influence the tone and direction of upcoming talks. It underscores the dual approach of negotiation and pressure.
However, the long-term impact on negotiations remains uncertain.
