Strong Galaxy Z Fold8 Sales Reportedly Push Samsung Toward Bigger Foldable Lineup
Samsung could dramatically expand its foldable smartphone portfolio in 2027, with reports suggesting the company may introduce as many as five Galaxy Z devices.
According to a report from South Koreaโs ETNews, Samsung has started early development work on another wide-format foldable smartphone for the Galaxy Z9 generation.
The move reportedly follows stronger-than-expected demand for the Galaxy Z Fold8.
Samsung is said to have increased its 2026 production target for the Fold8 by another one million units after receiving a positive market response.
The Fold8โs wider and shorter design is reportedly one of the major reasons behind its popularity.
When unfolded, the device offers a display with an approximately 4:3 aspect ratio.
This gives users more horizontal space compared with taller foldable designs.
The wider layout is particularly suitable for browsing websites, reading documents, viewing photographs and using multiple apps at the same time.
Samsung now appears interested in developing another foldable that pushes the wide-screen concept even further.
The new model could focus more heavily on entertainment, including movies, streaming and gaming.
New Wide Foldable Could Focus on Movies and Gaming
The additional foldable is reportedly still in the early stages of development.
Samsung has not yet finalised its screen dimensions, hardware specifications or commercial name.
However, reports suggest the company is considering an inner display with a wider aspect ratio than the Galaxy Z Fold8.
A wider screen could improve the experience of watching films and television programmes.
Many widescreen videos currently display black bars when played on foldable devices with more square-shaped displays.
A wider panel could reduce those unused areas and make better use of the available screen.
The device could also appeal to mobile gamers by offering a broader viewing area.
If Samsung moves forward with the project, the company could eventually offer two different wide-format Fold models.
One could focus mainly on productivity, multitasking and everyday use.
The second could be designed more specifically for entertainment and multimedia consumption.
The strategy would allow Samsung to target different groups of foldable smartphone buyers rather than relying on a single Fold design.
Five Galaxy Z Foldables Could Arrive in 2027
Current reports suggest Samsungโs 2027 foldable lineup could become its largest yet.
The expected portfolio could include the Galaxy Z Fold9, Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip9, a new wide-format foldable and a next-generation Galaxy Z TriFold.
If all five devices reach the market, Samsung would significantly broaden its position in the premium foldable smartphone segment.
The reported Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra could provide a more premium alternative to the standard Fold9.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip9 would continue Samsungโs clamshell-style foldable series.
Its expected development also suggests that Samsung has not abandoned the Flip lineup.
Earlier speculation had raised questions about whether the Galaxy Z Flip8 could become Samsungโs final traditional clamshell foldable.
The latest reports indicate that a Flip9 remains under consideration.
However, the more affordable Galaxy Z Flip FE is currently not expected to receive a direct successor.
Samsung could therefore concentrate more heavily on premium foldable models in 2027.
Samsung Reportedly Planning New Galaxy Z TriFold
Samsung is also reportedly developing another generation of its Galaxy Z TriFold.
The original TriFold received a limited commercial launch and was largely viewed as an experimental device showcasing Samsungโs foldable display technology.
Its three-panel design allows the device to unfold into a much larger display than conventional Fold smartphones.
The next-generation TriFold could receive wider commercial availability.
However, there is currently no indication that Samsung plans to make the complex device significantly more affordable.
Tri-fold smartphones remain difficult and expensive to manufacture because they require additional hinges, flexible display technology and complex internal engineering.
Samsung appears willing to continue exploring the category despite those challenges.
A broader launch of the next TriFold could help determine whether three-panel smartphones have enough consumer demand to become a larger product category.
Samsung has not officially confirmed any of the reported 2027 foldable devices.
The companyโs development plans could still change before the phones reach production.
Projects at an early stage can be delayed, redesigned or cancelled depending on technical challenges and market conditions.
For now, however, the strong reported performance of the Galaxy Z Fold8 appears to be encouraging Samsung to expand its foldable strategy rather than reduce it.
If the reported lineup becomes reality, 2027 could mark Samsungโs biggest push yet into foldable smartphones.
