Indian music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have made the “difficult decision” by ending their wedlock after 29 years of marriage, as reported by local media.
The news was confirmed by Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, who described it as a deeply challenging decision. “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has decided to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman, following significant emotional strain in their relationship,” Shah stated.
“Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties between them have created an insurmountable gap, one that neither feels able to bridge at this time,” the statement continued. Shah also conveyed Saira’s plea for privacy and understanding during this difficult period. “Mrs. Saira has taken this step out of pain and agony, and she requests the public to respect her space as she navigates this challenging chapter.”
Shortly after the lawyer’s statement, AR Rahman addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his sorrow. “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts,” he wrote.
“In this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter,” Rahman added.
The couple, who married in 1995, share three children: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
