Pakistan Moves to Secure Safe Return of Former Senator
The Foreign Office (FO) of Pakistan has confirmed that it is actively working to ensure the safe evacuation of former senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, detained by Israel last week. Khan was apprehended after Israel intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a humanitarian mission aimed at delivering aid to Gaza amid rising famine concerns.
Officials expressed hope that the evacuation process could be successfully concluded within the next couple of days, thanks to the efforts of Pakistanโs embassy in Amman and the cooperation of the Jordanian government.
Background of the Global Sumud Flotilla
Mushtaq Ahmad Khan led the Pakistani delegation aboard the 45-vessel flotilla. The flotilla, which included activists and politicians, set sail from Spain last month to challenge the blockade of Gaza. Among the participants was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, reflecting international support for humanitarian assistance.
As the flotilla approached Gaza, Israeli forces intercepted the vessels and detained the participants. Pakistan, along with several other countries, condemned the interception and labeled it an attack on humanitarian efforts.
Government Actions and Diplomatic Efforts
The Pakistani government has been closely coordinating efforts for Khanโs safe return. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for the immediate release of those detained and praised the dignified participation of Pakistani activists, including Mushtaq, in the humanitarian mission.
During a phone call with JI chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, the Prime Minister assured that Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was leading coordination with friendly nations and international organizations to secure the repatriation of Pakistani nationals.
Foreign Office Statement
The FO confirmed that Mushtaq Ahmad Khan is safe and in good health while in Israeli custody. The statement indicated that he will be presented before an Israeli court, and upon issuance of deportation orders, his repatriation will be fast-tracked.
The statement also expressed deep gratitude to Jordan for its support, calling its cooperation โexemplary and generous.โ
Public Support and Heroโs Welcome
Lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir stated that activists detained during the flotilla interception were receiving a heroโs welcome upon returning home. He expressed optimism that Mushtaq Ahmad Khan will also be welcomed similarly.
This is not the first incident of Israel blocking aid vessels to Gaza. In June, the Madleen vessel, carrying 12 members including activists and a journalist, was intercepted while attempting to deliver aid.
The Pakistani government continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and dignity of its citizens, emphasizing diplomatic channels and international cooperation. The upcoming days are expected to see Mushtaq Ahmad Khanโs return, highlighting Pakistanโs commitment to safeguarding its nationals during humanitarian missions.
