Kenyan marathon star Sabastian Sawe believes the two-hour barrier can be pushed even further after his historic world-record run in London.
The 31-year-old made history in April by clocking 1:59:30. He became the first man to officially complete a marathon in under two hours.
Sawe now believes a time below 1:59 is possible. He said ideal weather, strong pacing and peak fitness could help him achieve the milestone.
“I know it is possible to run under 1:59,” Sawe told AFP. He added that future athletes could push marathon times even further.
Sawe Sets Sights on Future Records
Sawe admitted he did not expect to break two hours in London. He was initially focused on defending his title.
Seeing the clock during the final stages left him surprised and grateful.
The Kenyan was expected to compete in Berlin again but missed the race because of a fractured leg. He said accepting injuries and focusing on recovery are part of professional sport.
Sawe hopes to return to the London Marathon in 2027. He is also targeting a major performance at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Sawe Calls for Cleaner Athletics
Sawe also discussed Tigst Assefa’s dramatic Berlin Marathon injury. The Ethiopian was on world-record pace before suffering an Achilles tendon rupture late in the race.
Sawe praised Assefa’s determination and backed her to challenge the world record again.
The Kenyan has also taken additional anti-doping tests beyond mandatory requirements. He said the approach can help rebuild trust in athletics.
Sawe hopes his testing efforts will improve Kenya’s reputation as Nairobi prepares to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
