UNICEF Pakistan’s National Ambassador for Children’s Rights, Saba Qamar, recently engaged in a pivotal discussion with German Consul General Dr. Rudiger Lotz to address critical issues concerning children’s rights and environmental challenges in Pakistan.
The meeting, held at the German Consulate in Karachi, highlighted the pressing need for youth involvement in tackling these challenges effectively.
Qamar, renowned for her advocacy for children’s welfare, emphasized the significant role young people can play in resolving societal issues.
“Children’s rights and environmental issues can be resolved by engaging the youth of this country,” she stated, reiterating her belief in empowering the younger generation to create meaningful change.
Dr. Lotz expressed Germany’s steadfast commitment to supporting children’s rights in Pakistan. While commending the progress made in this area, he underscored the global implications of environmental concerns, particularly global warming.
“Everyone has to play a role in preventing it,” he remarked, calling for collective action to address the escalating environmental crisis.
One of the meeting’s focal points was the German Consulate General’s flagship initiative, the “Make Karachi Green” campaign. This project aims to foster environmental awareness through tree planting and educational programs.
Ms. Anja Klos, Consul at the German Consulate General, provided a detailed briefing on the campaign, which seeks to educate schoolchildren about the importance of trees and the impact of climate change. The initiative represents a collaborative effort to instill environmental consciousness among Karachi’s youth.
To bolster this campaign, Dr. Lotz presented tree seeds to Qamar, symbolizing the partnership between the German Consulate and UNICEF.
He also extended an open invitation to Karachi’s residents to actively participate in the campaign, encouraging them to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
Germany’s longstanding collaboration with UNICEF in Pakistan was also discussed, with a shared commitment to advancing child rights and environmental sustainability.
This partnership continues to drive impactful initiatives that address the intertwined challenges of protecting children’s rights and preserving the environment.
The meeting concluded with a shared vision of fostering a future where children and the environment are prioritized, ensuring a sustainable and equitable society for generations to come.
