USAF C-17 Landing at Moscow fueled rumors of high profile visit

MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Intelligence Service chief Sergei Naryshkin confirmed on Thursday that he held a working-level meeting with CIA Director John Ratcliffe in Moscow earlier this week, describing such contacts between intelligence agencies as routine.

Naryshkin said the two officials discussed several issues falling within the responsibilities of their respective intelligence services. However, he declined to disclose details, describing intelligence matters as particularly sensitive.

“The meeting took place, but there is nothing unusual about it,” Naryshkin told reporters, adding that intelligence chiefs regularly communicate either personally or through other channels as part of their work.

Moscow Keeps Details of Intelligence Talks Secret

Neither Russia nor the United States has provided a detailed account of the discussions, leaving considerable uncertainty surrounding Ratcliffe’s unusual trip to Moscow.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has described the CIA director’s visit as “semi-routine”. The Kremlin has similarly avoided revealing the subjects discussed during the meeting.

Nevertheless, Ratcliffe’s visit attracted attention because it came as the Russia-Ukraine war continues and international diplomatic efforts seek a path toward ending the conflict.

Trump Hints Moscow Visit Could Produce Results

Trump said Wednesday that Ratcliffe’s discussions could potentially produce developments connected with efforts to end the Ukraine war.

“Something may come … out of it,” Trump said during an interview on the Glenn Beck Program, adding that his administration was working hard to end the conflict.

Furthermore, at least two US media organisations reported, citing unnamed sources, that Ratcliffe warned Moscow against attacking any NATO member state.

However, neither Washington nor Moscow has confirmed those reports.

The meeting represents a rare publicly acknowledged face-to-face engagement between the heads of the American and Russian foreign intelligence services amid continuing tensions between the two countries.

For now, both sides have kept the substance of the discussions confidential, while developments surrounding Ukraine remain under close international scrutiny.
