Former model Ksenia Maximova, who was once ranked among the world’s 50 most successful models of the 2000s, has become a prominent Russian anti-war activist in London.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Maximova has supported Ukraine, assisted Russian anti-war emigrants and refugees in Britain, and worked with the Russian Anti-War Committee.
She also entered British politics after being elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor in London, becoming one of the relatively few Russian-born figures to hold elected office in the UK.
On Monday, Russia’s Federal Security Service opened a criminal case against the 40-year-old, accusing her of involvement with a “terrorist organization.” Authorities alleged that the Russian Democratic Society, which she co-founded, raised money and provided assistance benefiting Ukraine.
Russian authorities have also placed Maximova on the country’s wanted list and added her name to its register of “terrorists and extremists.”
Speaking to The Moscow Times, Maximova said the designations had not negatively affected her political career in Britain. She said colleagues and supporters had instead shown considerable backing.
However, she expressed concern about possible consequences for her family in Russia and the possibility of future international travel complications.
Maximova said she had expected Russian authorities to target her because of her political activities.
She described joining British politics as a logical progression, saying it allowed her to address Russia-related issues from within the UK political system.
She also said her experience with the Liberal Democrats showed her the value of cooperation and mutual support, which she hopes to encourage within Russia’s anti-war opposition movement.
