Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the action as an “unacceptable” use of force.
Speaking at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 26, Lavrov also denounced the deaths of Khamenei’s family members and senior Iranian military and political officials.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 during US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Iranian state media later confirmed his death following the opening attacks.
Lavrov criticized the military campaign against Iran, arguing that targeting the leadership of a sovereign state represented a serious breach of international norms.
He also condemned strikes against Iran’s civilian infrastructure and nuclear facilities. According to Lavrov, the nuclear sites were operating under safeguards established by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The Russian foreign minister said attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities had caused serious damage to confidence in the international non-proliferation system.
Lavrov further warned that repeated military action against sovereign states could undermine established principles governing international relations.
The Russian diplomat also addressed wider instability in the Middle East, calling for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and restore regional security.
The UN General Assembly’s 81st session began in September 2026 and is focused on strengthening international cooperation and restoring confidence in the global institution.
