Lawmakers to receive virtual update as additional classified briefing expected later this week on key security matters
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff are scheduled to brief members of Congress on Monday regarding the recently announced US-Iran agreement, providing lawmakers with an update before the House of Representatives reconvenes.
The virtual briefing will take place as several House members continue returning to Washington following travel commitments, while the Senate remains on its two-week recess for the July 4 holiday period. Congressional sources said the session will allow lawmakers to receive the latest information on the agreement and its implementation.
Although the briefing will remain unclassified, it will be open to all members of both the House and Senate, enabling broad participation across Congress.
Virtual session to update lawmakers
According to congressional sources, Rubio and Witkoff will outline the key elements of the agreement, discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts and answer lawmakers’ questions regarding the administration’s negotiations with Iran.
The briefing comes as the US government continues consultations with Congress over the agreement, which has drawn significant attention from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Officials are expected to explain the current status of implementation and provide updates on future diplomatic engagement.
Holding the meeting virtually allows members who are still outside Washington to participate before legislative business resumes later on Monday.
Classified meeting planned later this week
Meanwhile, congressional sources indicated that a separate classified briefing is expected later this week for members serving on select committees responsible for national security, intelligence and foreign affairs oversight.
That closed-door session is expected to cover sensitive intelligence and security matters that cannot be discussed during the public briefing.
The administration has continued engaging lawmakers as negotiations with Iran move forward, while congressional leaders monitor the agreement’s diplomatic, security and regional implications. Additional briefings may be scheduled as implementation progresses and further developments emerge.
