KARACHI: A Rs65 million robbery at an Edhi Foundation centre has sparked protests in Karachi. Workers’ families, labour groups, civil society activists and citizens demanded immediate arrests.
The protesters gathered outside the Karachi Press Club on Sunday. They carried placards and chanted slogans demanding justice and recovery of the stolen funds.
The money was reportedly kept at the Sohrab Goth centre to pay salaries to low-income workers. Four armed men allegedly robbed the cash before escaping.
Edhi Foundation Chairman Faisal Edhi joined the demonstration. Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Chairman Asad Iqbal Butt and labour leaders also attended the protest.
Faisal Edhi said the foundation serves humanity and has no enmity with anyone. He described the robbery as deeply distressing for employees from poor families.
Calls for Recovery and Employee Support
Faisal Edhi urged the Sindh government to arrest the suspects and recover the stolen money. He also called for justice for affected employees.
Meanwhile, he assured workers that the foundation would assist them during the crisis.
Asad Iqbal Butt questioned the Sindh government’s response to the robbery. He demanded immediate financial assistance and compensation for the Edhi Foundation.
Families of affected employees also sought salary payments and stronger security at Edhi centres. They demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Moreover, protesters sought an explanation from the Sindh inspector general of police. They questioned why authorities had failed to arrest the suspects so far.
