KARACHI: Romania has proposed naming a major road in its port city of Constanta as “Karachi Avenue” to honor its enduring friendship with Pakistan and mark 61 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Strengthening Ties Between Port Cities
The proposal was presented during a meeting between Romanian Ambassador Dr. Dan Stoenescu and Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi. Both sides explored new avenues for collaboration in culture, education, and economic development to further strengthen relations between the two coastal cities.
According to an official statement, a reciprocal gesture is also being considered in Karachi, where a road could be named “Constanta Avenue.” These twin street names would symbolize mutual respect and the shared maritime heritage of the two countries.
Friendship Monument Planned in Karachi
The meeting also discussed the construction of a Pakistan–Romania Friendship Monument in Karachi. The project will be managed by the Pakistan Romania Business Council (PRBC) and serve as a landmark celebrating six decades of partnership.
Ambassador Stoenescu expressed gratitude to the Karachi administration for its support in identifying a suitable site for the monument. He added that Romania’s decision to reopen its Honorary Consulate in Karachi would further enhance trade, business cooperation, and cultural exchange between Sindh and Romania.
Expanding Cooperation and Investment
Both delegations highlighted opportunities for collaboration in urban management, sustainable development, and education, particularly through student and faculty exchange programs. They also emphasized expanding private-sector partnerships to boost trade and investment between Karachi, Sindh, and major Romanian cities.
Officials noted that these initiatives reflect the growing warmth in Pakistan–Romania relations and the shared commitment to fostering long-term cooperation.
