A kindergarten and a medical complex in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, sustained damage after debris from an intercepted missile fell on the facilities, authorities said Thursday.
The incident occurred as Yemen’s Houthi group claimed attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport. Saudi Civil Defence confirmed material damage at both sites but did not report whether anyone was injured.
Saudi Forces Intercept Missiles
The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted two ballistic missiles heading towards Riyadh on Thursday. It also reported intercepting another missile aimed at Khamis Mushait.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed the group had launched attacks against Riyadh airport and other Saudi locations. However, the claims about the extent of damage at the airport have not been independently verified.
Witnesses reported explosions in the capital. Meanwhile, reports indicated that a Saudia Airlines aircraft sustained significant damage while parked at the airport.
Airport Disruptions Affect Flights
The latest attacks disrupted air travel as several airlines suspended or cancelled services to Riyadh.
Air India cancelled flights to and from the Saudi capital until at least the weekend, while Lufthansa Group suspended Riyadh services through October 16. Passengers were advised to check with airlines before travelling.
The disruptions have raised concerns about aviation safety as the Houthis intensify their attacks on Saudi territory.
Regional Conflict Intensifies
The latest escalation comes amid renewed fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government troops.
The Houthis have also threatened Saudi energy facilities, raising concerns about oil infrastructure and regional security. Saudi Arabia has supported military operations aimed at pushing Houthi forces away from strategic areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
Authorities have not announced further details about the damage to the kindergarten and medical complex.
