ISLAMABAD: Sources within the election commission have confirmed that Liaquat Ali Chattha, former commissioner of Rawalpindi, has provided his statement regarding allegations of electoral rigging in the recent elections.
The inquiry committee, chaired by ECP Sindh member Nisar Durrani, issued a notice to Chattha prompting his response to the accusations.
Tasked with investigating allegations of electoral irregularities made by Liaquat Chattha last week, the investigation committee, led by Nisar Durrani, is actively probing the matter.
Details regarding the contents of Chattha’s statement have not been disclosed. However, his cooperation with the inquiry committee signals a willingness to address concerns regarding the integrity of electoral procedures.
On February 17, amidst revelations of electoral misconduct, Liaquat Ali Chattha resigned from his post, expressing remorse for his actions and a desire for atonement.
In a video statement, Chattha expressed deep regret and shame for his actions, even suggesting severe consequences such as the death penalty for himself.
He recounted presiding officers crying in front of him and admitted to surrendering to the police, revealing a suicide attempt driven by remorse.
Initiating its inquiry on February 19, the ECP’s high-level investigation committee sought transcripts of Chattha’s press conference from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).
In contrast, six district returning officers (ROs) from Rawalpindi Division have submitted written statements refuting the allegations made by the former commissioner.
