Renowned Pashto fiction writer, scholar and Sufi thinker Syed Tahir Bukhari Bacha has passed away at the age of 96 after a prolonged illness.
Bukhari Bacha was the spiritual successor and close associate of legendary Pashto poet Amir Hamza Khan Shinwari. His funeral prayers were offered in his native village, where literary figures, spiritual disciples, admirers and prominent personalities attended.
He was later laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Swabi district. His death prompted an outpouring of grief among literary and cultural circles across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Bukhari Bacha’s Literary And Spiritual Legacy
Born into a family with strong literary and spiritual traditions, Bukhari Bacha spent nearly eight decades promoting Pashto literature, Sufi philosophy and regional culture.
As a close associate and designated spiritual heir of Hamza Baba, he helped preserve the traditions associated with the legendary poet. He also promoted the mystical humanism that shaped much of Shinwari’s literary work.
Bukhari Bacha worked across several literary genres, including short stories, prose and critical essays. His writings frequently combined Pakhtun cultural traditions with Sufi principles and explored themes of resilience, spirituality and everyday life.
Writer Remembered As Mentor And Scholar
Beyond fiction, he authored and edited important works exploring modern Pashto ghazal and classical Sufi philosophy. He also remained an accessible mentor for generations of young writers, researchers and literary enthusiasts.
Throughout his life, Bukhari Bacha regularly participated in literary gatherings, academic seminars and poetry sessions across Peshawar, Landi Kotal and tribal districts. He consistently promoted literary preservation, cultural understanding and peace.
Meanwhile, literary and cultural organisations expressed deep sorrow over his death. Writers and scholars described his passing as a major loss for Pashto literature and Sufi heritage.
Bukhari Bacha leaves behind a substantial body of literary work, numerous disciples and a lasting influence on the cultural landscape of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
