The family of Renee Good has sued the Trump administration over her fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis.
Good, 37, was shot on January 7 while she and her wife joined protests against federal immigration operations in the city. The lawsuits accuse ICE agent Jonathan Ross and senior administration officials of excessive force, negligence and civil rights violations.
The family is seeking damages and a jury trial through two separate civil lawsuits. One case names the US government, while the other names Ross and several current and former federal officials.
Lawsuits Challenge Fatal Minneapolis Shooting
According to the lawsuits, Good and her wife had dropped their six-year-old son at school before encountering federal agents in south Minneapolis. Good remained inside their vehicle while her wife filmed the agents, and the family alleges that Good was not the subject of any investigation.
The lawsuits dispute the government’s account of the shooting and allege that Ross used excessive force. However, Ross has not faced criminal charges, and investigations into the shooting remain ongoing.
Family Seeks Accountability For Good’s Death
The legal action comes months after Good’s death intensified opposition to Operation Metro Surge, the federal immigration enforcement campaign in Minnesota. Her killing also preceded the fatal shooting of another US citizen, Alex Pretti, during immigration enforcement activity.
Good’s brother Brent Ganger and partner Becca Good are pursuing the lawsuits on behalf of her family and three children. Becca publicly described Renee as a loving mother who believed people deserved compassion, care and dignity.
Meanwhile, federal officials have defended the conduct of agents involved in the enforcement operations. The lawsuits will now place the allegations before the courts as the legal proceedings move forward.
