The opposition alliance in Pakistan has announced plans for nationwide protests today, with various political parties mobilizing against the current government.
The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has called for a sit-in at D-Chowk in Islamabad, protesting against expensive electricity contracts and overbilling. A large number of people are already heading towards Islamabad to participate in the protest.
In anticipation of the JI’s protest, police in Punjab conducted raids and arrested several leaders and activists.
JI’s Amir, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, has also announced that the party’s central secretary general, Amir-ul-Azim, will be leading the protest. Police raided Amir-ul-Azim’s residence, but while they failed to arrest him, they detained his driver, Shokat Mahmoud.
Meanwhile, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has also called for nationwide protests against inflation.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has also announced its participation in the protests. PTI leader Omar Ayub Khan has urged the public to prepare for new elections and has called for large-scale protests on Friday.
The PTI has called for the release of Imran Khan and other party leaders and has organized protests across the country.
The protests are expected to be held in all constituencies, with PTI MNAs leading the demonstrations in their respective areas. The protest in Islamabad will be led by PTI leader Shoaib Shaheen.
