The Punjab Communication and Works Department has initiated groundwork for several major infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi, including flyovers and underpasses at Kutchery Chowk and Jinnah Park, as well as retaining walls at Fatima Jinnah Women University and Jinnah Park.
According to officials, the combined cost of these projects is estimated at Rs. 6.6 billion. The Jinnah Park flyover and underpass alone will cost Rs. 5.2 billion, while the Iftikhar Janjua underpass is projected to require Rs. 2.7 billion.
Construction is expected to begin in the first week of November, pending clearance from garrison authorities. In preparation, the provincial highway department has started work on retaining walls to support service road construction and the relocation of utility lines.
A senior Punjab Highways official revealed that land acquisition includes four kanal and five marla for the Iftikhar Janjua underpass, mostly on military property, while eight kanal and two marla have been designated for Kutchery Chowk and five kanal and 19 marla for the Jinnah Park underpass.
Additionally, construction on three more underpasses โ at Race Course Park, Army Graveyard Square, and Chairing Cross on Peshawar Road โ is expected to start within the fiscal year 2025โ26.
Once completed, these developments will make the route from Ammar Chowk to the motorway signal-free, significantly improving traffic flow in the garrison city.
Executive Engineer Rana Qamar from the Punjab Highway Department confirmed that groundwork for retaining walls, service roads, and drainage systems at Jinnah Park and Fatima Jinnah Women University is already underway.
He added that full-scale construction on the main road network will commence next month, marking another milestone in Rawalpindiโs ongoing infrastructure modernization and urban development efforts.
