The Rawalpindi district administration has launched an emergency operation to combat rising air pollution caused by increasing smog, according to reports. The operation includes sealing two industrial units for breaching Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner, Hassan Waqar Cheema, confirmed that a fine of Rs 900,000 was imposed on these sealed units.
Additionally, twenty-four brick kilns have been demolished, and thirteen others have been ordered to cease operations to help mitigate the smog problem. A fine totaling Rs 8.1 million has been imposed on the brick kiln operators. In another measure, four chemical factories were sealed, with a Rs 900,000 fine levied on each.
As part of the ongoing anti-smog campaign, over 6,000 vehicles were inspected, resulting in fines totaling Rs 500,000 for 2,711 smoke-emitting vehicles. A total of 441 vehicle owners and drivers responsible for air pollution were arrested during the operation.
In related developments, Lahore’s district administration has also imposed restrictions due to the worsening smog. A ban on outdoor activities, including sports and exhibitions, has been enforced from November 11 to 17. Dining at outdoor restaurants is suspended, though religious gatherings remain exempt. Shops, markets, and malls must close by 8 PM, except for medical stores, grocery stores, and petrol pumps.
Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner has advised citizens to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, and take necessary precautions during the smog crisis.
